No
clever technology will save us once we kill off all our fellow
species. We have witnessed that, as our belching of soot and CO2 and
methane continues to grow and glaciers melt, as sea ice melts under the
weight of polar bears, whaling ships still rove the oceans, and factory
ships harvest the remnants of ocean species. We are ignorant of the
ways ecosystems work. Ignorant folks,
No clever technology will save us
once we kill off
all our fellow species...
We are ignorant of
the ways ecosystems work.
Ignorant folks, that's us.
that's
us. So when we debate whether we can do without polar bears, blue
whales, black-footed ferrets, we tread on dangerous ground. What
alternative do we have? We need a drastic change in lifestyle. To curb
the devastating effects of our greenhouse gas emissions, we need more
bike paths, more walking paths, public transport that is low-priced and
entirely under the control of federal law. We must rebuild our cities
to match these drastic changes. To consider the extinction of animal
species is to consider our own safety; to be kind to our children and
grand children, even unto the seventh generation, we have to
acknowledge our ignorance and take a stand now: keep all the animal
species that have journeyed with us for hundreds of years, mourn those
who have succumbed to our greed, but save what we can.
