HERB RINGER’S AMERICAN WEST
HERB GOES TO CALIFORNIA...
1945
From the journal of JOSEPH RINGER (Herb’s dad)
“March
28th, 1945. Got up at 630 am in L.A got breakfast then walked all along
business section...went in one of the big department stores, then we
took a train and road for about 1 hour over to Long Beach Calif. We
walked a few miles in town, here very beautiful place and along the
beach we walked around the Provilon where they give concerts..This was
some big City.
“Left
Long Beach by train back to L.A. at 11 am. Had dinner in L.A. Then went
and saw the Mexican settlement which was very interesting to us.... We
took a street car to the Mexican settlement and back to L.A.
“Then
we met Estella McGee at hotel at 5pm. So she took us for a swell supper
in a swell restaurant. After supper Herb treated us to a fne movie show
all of us. The picture was (A Song to Remember), all about Chopin the
composer. It was all in color the flm...we got back to the hotel by 11
pm.”
HERB
RINGER came West from his home in New Jersey in 1939. He never
lookedback. With camera in hand, Herb photographed the American West,
from the CanadianBor-der to the Rio Grande and from the Big Sur coast
to the High Plains.
We
believe Herb’s collection of Life in the West is one of the fnest. His
work has been published in The Zephyr for 20 years. I am pleased
fnally, to offer Herb’s photographs in color. We are also building a
new ‘album’ of his work, elsewhere on this site.
My dear friend died on December 11, 1998...JS
