PROOF THAT GLOBAL WARMING began 15 years ago. The screen never lies. According to Moab’s Channel 6 scanner, temperatures were already getting a bit uncomfortable as far back as 1996.
Somebody bring me another popsicle.
MAYOR TOM...
“New Moab” might be­lieve that “Mayor Dave” has presided over the town since the late Trias-sic Age, but in what now seems like a different world, TOM STOCKS wore the mayor’s badge for 16 years.
Colorful and contro­versial (we once got into a choking contest at Dave’s Corner Mar­ket over a Zephyr story), Tom donned his yellow T-shirt every four years and won four consecu­tive terms...still a re­cord.
You may have loved him or loathed him, but Tom Stocks was never dull.
THE BEGINNINGS OF THE WATER PARK...
Recently my hero JENNIFER SPEERS did it again. She bought the unsightly King World Water Park and is in the process of re­storing the scarred hillside. Here is a shot of the water park from more than a decade ago, when the water slide was in the process of being installed.
Who says you can’t reverse history?
And I’ll sing about an emptiness
the East has never known, Where coyotes don’t pay taxes
and a man can live alone,
And you’ve got to walk forever
just to fnd a telephone.
It’s sad,
but the telling takes me home.

For decades Moab had three greasy spoon cafes where Moabites gathered to debate the issues of the day. The Canyonlands Cafe met its demise in 1993. The Westerner Grill followed a couple years lat­er. Only Milt’s Stop n’ eat survives...
