The Tellin’ Takes Me Home
Remembering the Canyon Country...#3
By Jim Stiles
PROOF THAT GLOBAL WARMING began
15 years ago. The screen never lies. According to Moab’s Channel 6
scanner, temperatures were already getting a bit uncomfortable as far
back as 1996.
Somebody bring me another popsicle.
MAYOR TOM...
“New
Moab” might believe that “Mayor Dave” has presided over the town since
the late Trias-sic Age, but in what now seems like a different world,
TOM STOCKS wore the mayor’s badge for 16 years.
Colorful
and controversial (we once got into a choking contest at Dave’s Corner
Market over a Zephyr story), Tom donned his yellow T-shirt every four
years and won four consecutive terms...still a record.
You may have loved him or loathed him, but Tom Stocks was never dull.
THE BEGINNINGS OF THE WATER PARK...
Recently
my hero JENNIFER SPEERS did it again. She bought the unsightly King
World Water Park and is in the process of restoring the scarred
hillside. Here is a shot of the water park from more than a decade ago,
when the water slide was in the process of being installed.
Who says you can’t reverse history?
And I’ll sing about an emptiness
the East has never known, Where coyotes don’t pay taxes
and a man can live alone,
And you’ve got to walk forever
just to fnd a telephone.
It’s sad,
but the telling takes me home.
THE END OF THE CANYONLANDS CAFE...1993
For
decades Moab had three greasy spoon cafes where Moabites gathered to
debate the issues of the day. The Canyonlands Cafe met its demise in
1993. The Westerner Grill followed a couple years later. Only Milt’s
Stop n’ eat survives...
