Herb Ringer's AMERICAN WEST
"Notes on Reno & Vicinity"
In
1939, Herb Ringer drove West, more than 2000 miles, from his home in
New Jersey. He wanted a divorce and in those days, a trip to Reno,
Nevada was one of the few options available.
During
his stay at the Virginan Hotel, Herb learned the art of photography but
he also kept notes. More than anything, Herb was an historian, a
chronicler of life in the American West, though he never really knew
what his motivation was.
Here are the first two pages of his "Notes on Reno and Vicinity." I think they're incredible.

"Tex
Kennedy in my room, talking, stole Jimmy Driscoll's clothese in
exchange for debt J.D. owned...Later threatened to knife J.D.—Mrs. Ryan
relieved him of knife. Wanted me to go to with him to Mexico—work on
engineering project or ranch."
"Hobo jungle southwest of hotel along Truckee River. Saw hobos came out here all winter. Girls too."
