Glen Canyon Damn
I
doodled this cartoon, or one like it, many years ago. It was to be a
present for Edward Abbey and I drove all the way to Wolf Hole, Arizona
to give it to him. The jacket cover of The Monkey Wrench Gang said he made his home there, so I was determined to make the pilgrimmage.
But he wasn't there. Nobody was. It was just one of those things Abbey did.
I
ended up in Moab, showed my cartoon to a few seasonal rangers who told
me Abbey lived in Moab, on Spanish Valley Drive, in fact. Weeks later,
I gave him the original.
But I re-drew the damn a few more times...once for the cover of Abbey's book of essays, The Journey Home and two for myself.
The
drawing appeared on t-shirts for a while. A local group called the
Canyon Country Council marketed them in Moab in the late 70s. I sold a
few myself in the 80s and then gave the t-shirt rights to Earth First!
They still use the toon for the logo on their facebook page.
When I finally gave Abbey his original, I told him I'd gone all the way to Wolf Hole to find him.
"Yes," Abbey grinned. "Wolf Hole...what's it like down there?"
