GEORGE FOX clearly left his initials on a stone wall, 30 miles south of Moab in 1889 (see June/July issue). The inscription on the left is just south of the Arches National Park entrance. CONTROLLING BANK EROSION. Before UDOT began speding millions of dollars to make road improvements, road crews found more innovative (and less expensive) ways to protect the highways. Near Dalton Wells, where Courthouse Wash runs close to the highway, old junk cars were utilized to stabilize the streambed and keep flash floods from reaching the highway. THE OLD COLORADO RIVER BRIDGE: This Herb Ringer photo shows the old river bridge in 1956. All that reamins of it today is the north abutment. |
