Friday March 17th
Sunday Jan 1st 1939
"St Patrick's Day"
No one here remembers it, it seems, and do not realize its meaning as they do in the majority of settlements in the outside world. Don't think the ruling society is giving any entertainment and dinner on this date as they have in the past always given me a winter invitation but I have not received any to date. Clear and warm and no doubt the snow
is going fast on the mesas.
Happy New Year to all the world. I took a bath this a.m. then attended the Baptist Church meeting at 7:30 p.m. Only about 14 attended. Howard Balsley was among them. Clear and cold weather.
Friday Jan 6th. Long and family visited me and I gave them a Mackinaw coat. They stated they are still trying to borrow the money to pay me on act of mine deal.
Sat March 18th
Read Charles Kelly's book "The Outlaw Trail" today. I note he makes some issues as in Telluride Bank Robbery also Delta Bank Robbery but it is well written. He no doubt did the best he could and must have spent a lot of time gathering data.
Saturday April 1st
I got a little "loaded" last night and I feel myself slipping and must cut it out and at least try again to drink in moderation.
Saturday April 29th
Had a good visit with Blanche and family at 4 p.m. Also returned the book "Gone With the Wind" by Margaret Mitchell. It is a remarkable book of Civil War times and is true to life.
Main Street, Moab
World War II Comes to Moab
Friday Sept 1/ War clouds look black in Europe today. Hitler and Poland are 'standing pat.'
Sat Sep 2, 1939 Germany invaded Poland today on a small scale with tanks and aeroplanes and bombed warsaw & other cities in Poland.
Thursday Dec 1st, 1938
Called at Long and he was gone to Lisbon. Mrs Long stated they were broke, could not let me have even $2.00. It doesn't look good to me as an agreement broken on first date means what assurance have I for further agreements or my lease agreement!
Sunday 3rd Visited the Days. Still not feeling good but hope to be OK in a coupl of days. It is reported that Poland has declared a state of war... Reports state that England and France declare war on Germany. Also reported that Russia states that she will furnish Germany anything she wants—men, arms, etc. I do not believe this but should know by tomorrow's Daily Sentinel.
Roosevelt gave an address to the people of the U.S. advocating we must by all means be neutral in this war as far as possible.
I fully agree with him on this point- although we may be compelled to go into it later.
Hope after it is all over we will have a true co-operative socialized government in the U.S. and all over the world.
Tuesday Dec. 6th 2:30 p.m.
Saw Long and he seems to be "in a slump" in regard to raising payment of $100.00 cash Dec. 1st. He has paid me only cash of $6.00 to date. This is disappointing...
Saturday December 17th. Long visited me and stated he was unable to raise even a dollar on his payment due Dec. 1st but that I could eat as his hotel indefinitely.
Monday Sept 4th Labor Day. 9 a.m. Haven't got my Sentinel yet so do not know latest war news.
10 a.m. Sentinel states war not yet declared by England and France, also it's a false report about capture of the German liner Bremen, and Russia joining Germany in war and no declaration of war between Japan and Russia.
Anything may occur in the next 24 hrs. Italy advocates neutrality and peace. I am still feeling poorly but hope I will feel better in a day or so.
Wednesday the 21st.
Long paid me cash $5.00 today on his account of $100.00 due me by Long and associates on the lease on my mine in Lisbon Valley. This makes a total of $15.45... Jack Wilcox died this a.m. Was an old timer here and 80 years old.
Sunday December 31st 1939
Went to Baptist church service at 7p.m. but could not hear sermon and very little conversation. Guess my deafness is still worse than formerly although I can hear mature voices yet fairly well. Some of members invited me to entertainment and perhaps supper in basement of church but I felt so self-conscious about my defective hearing I did not go. Perhaps some will understand my affliction. I hope so, as I try to mean well.
Sunday March 17th 1939. St Patrick's Day. I dug up my shamrock and wore it today and twas the only one I saw in Moab. Wore it on my coat lapel.
